1. The Red Sea area is part of the GREAT RIFT VALLEY. My dear students, do you know what that is yet? ( I really wanted to travel into Egypt to show you more sights, but I just couldn't do it due to safety concerns.)
The GRV, as we say here in Israel ( no, we don't) is an example of a divergent plate boundary on the Continental Plates. It is amazing to be present in some of the geographical areas I've taught about for years in my classes.
OK, so it is the Eastern branch, but still...btw if you can't find me, follow the RED SEA up and to the right. Bingo!

Can we talk about CLIMATE CHANGE, GLOBAL WARMING and CORAL BLEACHING?
OK, first of all, the climate IS changing and there's a lot to that. It doesn't mean Maine will be Florida, it means global climate change. Anyway, one of the consequences of the world getting warmer, is coral bleaching.
"Climate change impacts have been identified as one of the greatest global threats to coral reef ecosystems. As temperature rise, mass bleaching, and infectious disease outbreaks are likely to become more frequent. Additionally, carbon dioxide (CO2) absorbed into the ocean from the atmosphere has already begun to reduce calcification rates in reef-building and reef-associated organisms by altering sea water chemistry through decreases in pH (ocean acidification). In the long term, failure to address carbon emissions and the resultant impacts of rising temperatures and ocean acidification could make many other coral ecosystem management efforts futile."

Basically, warmer temps= damage to the health of coral reefs. E and I went snorkeling here in the Red Sea. ( IT WAS FREEZING, for me the wimp, anyway...) I have snorkeled for the last 20 years in the Caribbean. I have seen some AMAZING things, especially in the Turks & Caicos Islands.
Here's where they are- TCI
thanks google
The Red Sea was OK. I read an article that said this area would have greater resistance to global warming due to its location, etc. but overall, are there ANY coral reefs that are still AMAZING?ANYWHERE?
Due to the increase in temp of the Earth most are going to become unhealthy, but does anyone know where there are STILL some healthy coral ecosystems? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone?
